REEL REPAIR
There is nothing more frustrating than to be on the water bright and early, the sky is perfect the breeze is comfortable, and then your reel starts to act up or malfunction. You spend the next few minutes trying to figure out what's wrong or swapping it out for another reel. In the mean time those perfect conditions are slipping away and before you know it the sun is high and your chance is gone.
Or you could be in the middle of a battle with your fish of a life time and your reel fails, causing your fish to have the upper hand or worse yet your line to break leaving you with nothing to show for it but a broken reel.
With routine service, cleaning, and repair you can feel confident that your reel will be ready for anything a fish can deliver!
Cleaning and maintenance is vital to the longevity of your freshwater baitcasting reels. We spend hundreds if not thousands of dollars to fill our rod lockers with top of the line equipment; this is a serious investment for anglers. With regular servicing of your reels you can be assured of the flawless performance when on the water that you have come to expect from today's technologically advanced reels.
Over time several things happen to our reels. First is wear, it's just a fact of life that every time you cast your reel the bushings and bearings of the internal workings of your equipment are wearing ever so slightly. This happens so slowly that you don't notice it, until one day several months if not years down the road you realize your reel just isn't working like it used to. It might be making noise, maybe it doesn't free spin as easy, or the drag isn't as smooth as it has been in the past. At this point you are left with only a couple of options. You could buy a new reel or you can have it cleaned and replace the parts that are broken or worn out.
By cleaning and re-lubricating your reels on a regular basis, you remove contaminates that are robbing your reel of performance. As the internal parts of a reel wear, small particles and dust mix with the lubricants in your reel and cause them to be abrasive. This is a snow ball effect that will speed the deterioration of your reel greatly with each cast and each turn of the handle. If left to long, the repair costs get expensive, today's high precision bearings are very costly and after damage is done there is no cure except to replace them. This can be prevented with regular maintenance.
Contaminants enter a reel through use, they get rained on, we leave them on the decks of our boats unprotected from dirt and grime as we drive to and from lakes (believe it or not when you do this you are coating your reel in road film!). Fishing! When you retrieve your cast your line is bringing with it all the particles of debris that float in our waters, even if you are fishing what appears to be ultra clean water, there is dust and fine particles on the surface of the water and as your line passes through it, these contaminates collect on your line and build up on your spool. Over time contaminants that have built up on your spool and line work their way between the spool housing and the spool it's self. Once inside the housing, they are free to enter your bearings, gears and bushings and wreck havoc on your reels performance!
How often do you open the side plate on your reels to adjust your breaking system? Daily life gets deposited inside your reel every time you open it, everything from dust to pollen. The spool bearing in your side plate is subjected to these contaminants and will break down over time if not properly cleaned and re lubricated regularly.
The bearings in your reel have extremely close tolerances, so close in fact that the slightest particle can slow them down or even stop them.
Over time lubricants break down, run off, or simply become dirty. I know you have experienced that buddy that every time he casts you can hear his reel squeal, or maybe this has happened to you. Then you spray some Reel Magic or Line Conditioner on the reels cast control bearing or you pull the side plate off and hit that bearing and it stops for the mean time. If your bearing was so dry that it was making noise, it was also eating away at it's self. Once this happens tiny particles of the bearing have been worn off either the bearing case or the ball bearing it's self and now these particles are inside your bearing and every time you cast they are eating away at your performance causing your reel to work slower and slower. After a bearing has been run dry the damaging particles and dust need to be removed and a proper lubricant applied.
The simple fix, have your reels serviced and cleaned regularly and you will avoid costly repairs and replacements.
